There’s nothing quite like escaping the heatwave and returning to the cool embrace of your air-conditioned living room. However, this can be difficult if your air conditioner isn't even cooling. Don't fret! There is a solution to every problem and we’ll provide you with one for fixing your AC.
Fixing your air conditioner is easier than you think. When you are aware of the essential parts of your air conditioning unit, you can maintain your AC on your own. The following steps will help you do so.
The refrigerant in an AC unit is a liquid that condenses and then evaporates to provide cooling. Moreover, the evaporation coil removes the hot air from the room and allows the blower fan to provide cool air.
Make sure you’re familiar with these essential components by reading the user manual that came with your appliance. Then check to see if each of them is functioning as it should. If there is no problem with the refrigerant, coils, or blower fan, try this next solution to fix the cooling problem.
The simplest method of fixing the cooling problem is to adjust the thermostat settings. Sometimes the thermostat settings switch from “Automatic” to “fan” and the cooling goes down.
If you set it on “fan”, the AC will only blow air across the room without providing additional cooling. But if you just wanted ventilation, you’d turn on the fan, right? The AC provides cooling based on the temperature of the room when it is set on “Automatic”. Or, you could put it on “cool” to get the maximum cooling effect regardless of the room temperature.
Dusty air filters can interrupt the airflow in an air conditioner, as they only allow short spurts of air to pass through. Moreover, poor airflow is the number one reason for A/C failure.
There are two types of filters in an air conditioner. Each filter has a particular cleaning method. Here is how you can clean the filters of disposable and reusable filters.
If you have a disposable filter, you need to replace it every month (or as per the manufacturer’s specifications). Additionally, if you want to clean these filters, you should again follow the manufacturer’s specifications. Make sure you inspect them intermittently to avoid any problems with the air flow.
If you have a reusable filter, wash them according to the manufactures’ specifications. Dry each filter properly to avoid any interruption in the airflow. Here one way to clean the filters:
If the filters are too dirty, you can take them out and wash them using soap and water. Do not use chemical cleaners or strong detergents, and do not scrub harshly, because that can damage the filters. Gentle is the way to go!
After gently washing, let them dry for at least eight hours (or use a blow dryer on a cool setting) and place them back in the AC unit with care. Then turn on the air conditioner to see whether it's finally doing its job.
An air conditioner is a delicate piece of machinery and you should handle it with care. If you can maintain the thermostat, filters, and the general upkeep of your air conditioner, you won't have to call for help from an expert. However, if there are any problems with the internal working, call a professional AC repairman. They will provide you with useful information on how to maintain its cooling and offer advice on cleaning and general upkeep to prevent future problems.
