What to do if a Pipe Bursts?

Temporary Ways to Fix the Burst Pipes

The Main Cause for Burst

Burst and frozen pipes can wreak havoc in your home or business, causing extensive damage and disruption. The primary cause of burst pipes is temperature fluctuations, especially in Edmonton's harsh winters. Extreme cold can freeze the water in pipes, causing cracks or ruptures.

What is the Duration of the Burst Pipe Repair Service?

The time for burst pipe repair varies based on factors like damage complexity, accessibility, and plumber expertise. Simple repairs may take hours, while complex ones could span several days.
Swiftly contacting a reliable plumbing service minimizes water damage. The repair process includes damage assessment, leak source identification, water supply shutdown, repairs or replacements, and thorough testing for effective resolution.

Is it Possible for a Pipe to Burst Even When the Water Supply is Turned Off?

A pipe can indeed burst even if the water is shut off. The likelihood of freezing increases significantly when there is stagnant liquid in the pipes, as opposed to flowing water. Thus, it is crucial to ensure that you thoroughly drain your lines.
Moreover, it's important to note that a water shutoff valve only stops water from entering your home, but the liquid in your main supply line beneath your property could still freeze.

When Should You Consider Replacing a Drain Pipe?

A drain pipe replacement may be necessary when you notice persistent clogs or slow drainage in your plumbing system. Additionally, visible corrosion, leaks, or structural damage in the pipes can be indicators that replacement is needed.
If your pipes are old and made of outdated materials, such as galvanized steel, it's often wise to consider replacement to prevent future issues and improve the efficiency of your drainage system.

1. Why Do Pipes Burst When it Warms Up?
When the temperature rises, the frozen water in the pipes gets bigger and pushes against the pipe walls. This can make the pipe break and leak water when the ice turns to liquid again.

2. How Can I Prevent Pipes from Freezing and Bursting?
To avoid having frozen and burst pipes, you should cover them with insulation, keep your home warm enough, and let some water flow from the taps to reduce pressure.

3. What are the Signs of a Burst Pipe?
You can tell if you have a burst pipe by noticing lower water pressure, weird sounds from the pipes, damp spots on the walls, floors, or ceilings, and mold growth.

4. How Much Does it Cost to Repair a Burst Pipe?
The price to fix a burst pipe varies depending on the kind, location, and size of the damage. The typical cost of burst pipe repair is from $200 to $1,000, with most people spending around $500 for a fair repair with a new piece of pipe added.

5. Can Burst Pipes Cause Structural Damage to My Home?
Burst pipes can damage the structure of your home by wetting the drywall, wood, insulation, and electrical wiring. This can cause rot, mold, corrosion, and fire risks.

6. Are There Temporary Fixes for a Burst Pipe?
There are some short-term solutions for a burst pipe, such as putting a piece of rubber over the leak and clamping it with a C-clamp, or using epoxy, bonding tape, or soldering to close the leak. However, these are not lasting solutions and you should contact a professional plumber to change the broken pipe as soon as you can.

7. Can Burst Pipes Affect Water Quality?
Burst pipes can harm water quality by bringing in pollutants, such as dirt, debris, bacteria, or chemicals, into the water supply. This can make the water dangerous to drink or use for cooking, washing, or bathing. You should boil the water or use bottled water until the pipe is repaired and the water is checked.

8. Are Burst Pipes Most Common in Certain Types of Plumbing Systems?
Burst pipes are more frequent in certain kinds of plumbing systems, such as those made of cast iron, lead, or copper. These materials are more likely to corrode, freeze, or crack than newer materials, such as PVC, PEX, or CPVC. Older plumbing systems may also have weaker joints or fittings that can collapse under pressure.

9. How Often Should I Inspect My Plumbing to Prevent Burst Pipes?
You should check your plumbing often to prevent burst pipes, especially before the winter season. You should look for signs of corrosion, leaks, cracks, or damage on the pipes, valves, and faucets. You should also check the water pressure and temperature, and flush the water heater to remove sediment.

FAQs

Burst pipes can cause extensive damage, so it's usually best to call a professional plumber. However, if you have some plumbing experience and can quickly locate and isolate the burst, you may temporarily patch it until the pros arrive. Safety should be the top priority.
Burst pipes can result from freezing temperatures, corrosion, high water pressure, and even tree root intrusion. To prevent them, insulate pipes in cold climates, maintain reasonable water pressure, and schedule regular plumbing inspections to identify potential issues early.
If you discover a burst pipe, the first step is to shut off the main water supply to prevent further flooding. Then, call a professional plumber immediately. While waiting for them to arrive, try to contain the water with buckets, towels, or a wet-dry vacuum to minimize damage.
Hidden burst pipes can be challenging to detect. Look for signs such as water stains on walls or ceilings, reduced water pressure, or unexplained increases in your water bill. Thermal imaging technology is often used by professionals to identify hidden burst pipes.
The repair process typically involves assessing the damage, determining the cause, cutting out the damaged section of the pipe, and replacing it. Depending on the extent of damage, repairs may involve soldering, epoxy sealing, or even full pipe replacements. Cleanup and water damage restoration may also be necessary.

It has been two years and we love our John Wood water heater!Tom and his Capital Plumbing install team were quiet, efficient, friendly and cleaned up the area well following install. At the same time, all sinks had an easy-to-use shut-off valve added beneath for safety in case of water emergency, a water line for future refrigerator was installed and they threw in a new, safe hose attachment for the clothes washer to replace the aging rubber. Never even thought of it. You never want a water line to burst!

Great experience. Capital plumbing was able to get me in within 2 days whereas all other plumbing companies I called couldn't get me in until next week. I was late returning Toms call, so he took the liberty of doing an inspection on my home and flagged a couple more issues before fixing the one I called about. Really appreciate his diligence and customer service!
