Is Your Pipe Frozen?

What Causes Frozen Pipes to Burst?

Extremely cold temperatures can also cause damage to your pipes. In Edmonton, we suffer from winters with harsh temperatures that go well below freezing. These cold days put your pipes at risk for freezing, turning the water into solid ice and causing dangerous blockages.

When the temperatures drop, your pipes may be at risk. If your pipes are not properly insulated, frozen pipes are cause for concern. Once your pipes are frozen, this ice can continue to expand. If this issue is left unresolved, it can cause your pipe to burst or crack.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes - 5 Useful Tips

  • Always check the pipes located on outside walls
  • Hose-bibs are the biggest culprit and freeze frequently
  • The pipes are extremely cold to touch
  • Frost developed on the pipes
  • No water flowing from faucets

What to do If Pipes are Frozen?

Once you suspect that your pipes are frozen, do not wait. Contact Capital Plumbing & heating our expert local plumbers come to your home to unfreeze and repair your frozen pipes to prevent any further issues, bursts, or cracks.

We understand that your frozen pipes occur at inconvenient times. Our team of experienced technicians work around-the-clock to provide you with solutions to any of your plumbing needs - no matter the time of day or night.

What You Should Do When Your Pipes Freeze

If you suspect that your pipes are frozen, you first need to shut off your main water valve to take pressure off your pipes and prevent flooding. If you can spot the blockage, you may be able to thaw the ice yourself with the help of a space heater or hairdryer.

Contact our professionals so we can make our way to your home to inspect and thaw the leak and prevent any other damages.

While all poorly-insulated pipes are susceptible to freezing when the temperatures drop dramatically, there are some pipes that freeze more frequently, including:

  • Exposed pipes
  • Water supply pipes in unheated areas
  • Pipes in walls with little to no insulation

1. How Much Does It Cost to Repair Frozen Pipes?
The cost of repairing frozen pipes depends on several factors, such as the location, length, and extent of the damage. The average cost of repairing a burst pipe is $500, but it can range from $100 to $4,000 depending on the situation.

2. Can Frozen Pipes Be Fixed?
Yes, frozen pipes can be fixed by repairing any cracks or bursts. However, this is not a DIY job and requires professional assistance. We offer expert frozen pipes repair services in Edmonton, with experienced technicians who can unfreeze and fix your pipes quickly and safely.

3. What Is the Best Solution for Frozen Pipes?
The best solution for frozen pipes is to prevent them from freezing in the first place by taking proper precautions, such as insulating your pipes, disconnecting hose bibbs, installing pressure relief valves, and keeping your faucets dripping during cold weather. If your pipes are already frozen, you should shut off the main water valve and call a plumber as soon as possible.

4. At What Temperature Do Pipes Freeze?
A general rule is that pipes can freeze when the temperature drops below 0°C (32°F). Pipes that are exposed, unheated, or poorly insulated are more vulnerable to freezing than pipes that are protected, heated, or well insulated.

5. How Do Plumbers Unfreeze Pipes in Walls?
Plumbers use various methods to unfreeze pipes in walls, depending on the accessibility and severity of the problem. Some common techniques include using a heat gun, a blowtorch, a space heater, or a heating pad to apply heat to the affected area. Plumbers can also use specialized equipment, such as infrared cameras or thermal imaging, to locate hidden pipes.

6. What Should I Do If My Pipes Are Frozen?
If you suspect that your pipes are frozen, you should act fast to minimize the damage and avoid a burst. You should first turn off the main water valve and open the faucets to relieve the pressure. Then, you should try to locate the frozen section and apply gentle heat if possible. You should also contact a plumber immediately to inspect and repair your pipes.

7. What Are the Dangers of Frozen Pipes?
Frozen pipes are not only inconvenient, but also hazardous. They can cause water loss, increased bills, low water pressure, poor air quality, and mold growth. Moreover, frozen pipes can burst, causing flooding, water damage, structural damage, and electrical hazards. Therefore, it is essential to prevent and fix frozen pipes as soon as possible.

8. Should i turn off water if pipes are frozen?
Yes, turn off the water supply ASAP! When pipes freeze, the expanding cold can burst and flood your home. Taking immediate action to turn off the water can help mitigate the risk of these issues, preventing potential disasters and the need for extensive repairs.

It has been two years and we love our John Wood water heater!Tom and his Capital Plumbing install team were quiet, efficient, friendly and cleaned up the area well following install. At the same time, all sinks had an easy-to-use shut-off valve added beneath for safety in case of water emergency, a water line for future refrigerator was installed and they threw in a new, safe hose attachment for the clothes washer to replace the aging rubber. Never even thought of it. You never want a water line to burst!

Great experience. Capital plumbing was able to get me in within 2 days whereas all other plumbing companies I called couldn't get me in until next week. I was late returning Toms call, so he took the liberty of doing an inspection on my home and flagged a couple more issues before fixing the one I called about. Really appreciate his diligence and customer service!

A couple of weeks ago Darren replaced our hot water tank after it burst. Capital was so quick to respond and Darren was very good. He helped with the flood we had from the tank. Within a few hours we had a new water tank installed. Today Daniel came back and did amazingly replacing our sump pump and cleaning our furnace and humidifier. He is very thorough and did a great job explaining our issues. Thanks Capital plumbing and heating for always being there for us and having the best employees.
