Do you have several questions about your plumbing system? Are you looking for answers from a trusted plumber? You’ve come to the right place. We have listed some of the most common plumbing questions that we usually get from our customers to maintain your plumbing system. Here they are.
1) Why Does the Toilet Keep Running?
This is one of the most common questions we get asked by our customers. A running toilet is often caused by the flapper not closing correctly or failing to make a proper seal around the flush valve. If the flapper in the flush is not closing, try jiggling the handle a few times, which should typically fix it. If it doesn’t work, your flapper is probably worn and needs to be replaced. We can replace it for you, just give us a call.
2) What Can I Put in My Garbage Disposal?
People often damage their garbage disposal by trying to wash down all kinds of foods. Garbage disposals are designed to break up soft debris, like mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, eggs, etc. So, avoid putting hard things in your garbage disposals, like bones, coffee grounds, eggshells, etc. These hard pieces of debris can wear out the blades or jam the motor. Only wash down soft waste that can be managed by the disposal.
3) Are Chemical Drain Cleaners Safe to Use?
Chemical drain cleaners are marketed as the best solution to clogged drains, but the reality is not the same. Chemical drain cleaners are actually quite harmful to your pipes, as well as the environment. They contain harsh chemicals that can deteriorate your drain lines from within, mostly if they are made of PVC. Plus, chemical drain cleaners end up in the ground and damage the local ecosystem. So, do not use chemical drain cleaners.
4) Why Are My Pipes Banging?
If you have old pipelines, you may have heard your pipes banging. This is generally caused due to a sudden change in pressure. Old pipes were designed for lower water pressure, but modern appliances suck water with higher pressure, causing the pipelines to jerk and bang. Your best solution is to locate the banging noise and use pipe straps to hold the pipeline in place. If that doesn’t work, you can even use water hammer arrestors to cushion the water pressure change. Contact us to know more about how to fix banging pipes.
5) How Do I Unclog My Drains?
Clogged drains are one of Edmonton’s most common plumbing problems, and the good thing is that you can fix and unclog your drains on your own in most cases. It’s relatively easy to do. First, try using a plunger to unclog the drain. If that doesn’t work, you can pour boiling water or equal parts baking soda and vinegar down the drain. If even that doesn’t work, contact us to clear your drains. We suggest not using chemical drain cleaners.
