Plumbing is usually an afterthought for most homeowners, most of us aren't really educated on the ins and outs - and end up paying extra money for work that could’ve easily been avoided.
So, we thought we’d put ourselves out of a job here at Capital Plumbing by giving you a few tips to make sure you call us as little as possible.
Although there’s no way to completely avoid plumbing issues, here are 3 simple but impactful plumbing tips that can help keep your system running smoothly.
One of the most common habits you can get accustomed to is watching (and hearing!) for leaky faucets and shower heads. They’re super common issues that often come from nowhere. The earlier you catch a leak, the more money you'll save in wasted water.
Also, its super important to learn where your main shut off valve is - so that you can cut off your water supply if you ever encounter a pipe burst, this could help save your home from flooding in an emergency.
Alternatively, if shutting down your main water supply isn't necessary, you can turn off the water going to a specific fixture. Toilets, sinks, washers, and water heaters all have their own shut off and you should know how to shut each one.
If you have a room (or a house) that can get a little chilly, take the summer months as an opportunity to set yourself up with better air circulation.
Pipes are prone to freezing in the cold weather, that's just what pipes do.
So, to prevent this - all pipes in the garage, garden, outside walls, and other exposed areas should always be insulated.
Otherwise, you run the risk of flooding your home with a bursted pipe - trust me, it will happen and it won’t be pretty. Take this as a warning!
Pouring most things down the drain is a bad idea, but grease or oil is the worst idea.
Everything you pour is going to build up. You won’t notice it at first, you’ll think it’s totally fine, but these nasty liquids and bits of food will compound over time and slowly come back to haunt you.
So next time you’re about to pour some cooking liquid down the drain, think about your pipes. Opt for a safer disposal option - for example, wait for fat to solidify before throwing it in your compost bin.
This also definitely applies to showers or sinks, in regards to hair. Use a basket strainer! Oh and do not flush things that should not be flushed.
Finally, if you do find yourself in a clogging situation, make sure you are at least equipped with a plunger, pipe wrench, and a drain snake. These 3 tools will help you remove any small blockages, unclog drains, and repair slightly leaky faucets.
All these tips will help maximize the health of your pipes. Just remember, if time does catch up to you, or if you ever make a mistake and aren’t sure what to do, Capital Plumbing will always be just a call away - with 24/7 support for any & all of your plumbing needs.
