At Capital Plumbing, we're not just your plumbing service provider but your trusted partner in maintaining the comfort and functionality of your home or business. We've got you covered from addressing plumbing emergencies to installing high-quality water softeners.

What is a Water Softener and How does it work?

A water softener is a crucial appliance that can make a significant difference in your daily life. It works by removing the minerals that make water hard, such as calcium and magnesium. Hard water can lead to scale buildup in your pipes, appliances, and fixtures, reducing their efficiency and lifespan. It can also leave stubborn stains on your dishes, clothes, and even your hair.

Why Investing in a Water Softener is a Wise Choice?

Investing in a water softener can greatly improve the quality of water in your home. Whether you're dealing with hard water issues or looking to enhance the performance and longevity of your appliances, a water softener can provide numerous benefits. However, like any investment, it's important to consider both the pros and cons before making a decision.

Pros Of Water Softener

Softer Skin and Hair

Softened water is gentler on your skin and hair, reducing dryness and irritation caused by mineral deposits in hard water.

Extended Appliance Lifespan:

Water softeners discharge brine, which contains high levels of salt, into the wastewater system. This can be harmful to the environment if not

Sodium Content

Softened water may contain higher levels of sodium, which can be a concern for individuals on sodium-restricted diets.

Ongoing Maintenance

Water softeners require periodic maintenance, such as refilling the salt tank and cleaning the resin bed, which can be time-consuming.

most common types of plumbing issues and how to spot them early on

4 Common Types of Water Softeners

When choosing a water softener for your home, you have several options. Each type has its advantages, and our team at Capital Plumbing can help you select the one that best suits your needs. Here are 4 common types of water softeners:

Salt-Based Water Softeners

Salt-based water softeners use a process called ion exchange to remove hard water minerals.

Salt-Free Water Softeners

Salt-free water softeners, also known as descalers, work by altering the structure of hard water minerals, preventing them from sticking to surfaces.

Dual-Tank Water Softeners

Dual-tank water softeners ensure an uninterrupted soft water supply by having two tanks that alternate between regeneration cycles.

Magnetic Water Softeners

Magnetic water softeners use magnets to alter the behavior of hard water minerals.

    FAQs

Water softeners primarily remove calcium and magnesium ions, which are the primary contributors to hardness. They do not remove other minerals or contaminants such as iron, manganese, or chlorine. To address those, additional treatment methods may be necessary.
There are eco-friendly water softener alternatives like salt-free systems or template-assisted crystallization (TAC) that do not use traditional salt-based regeneration processes. These options are less harmful to the environment and produce less wastewater.
Water softeners can add a small amount of sodium to softened water, which may not be suitable for individuals on sodium-restricted diets. However, the sodium levels are typically low and may not significantly affect overall sodium intake for most people. Some water softeners also offer a bypass valve for drinking water taps to provide unsoftened water.
Water softeners do require maintenance. This includes replenishing the salt reservoir in salt-based systems and periodic cleaning or maintenance of the resin tank. The frequency of maintenance can vary based on water hardness levels and system capacity.

The cost of water softener systems in Canada can vary widely depending on factors like brand, capacity, features, and installation requirements. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $2,500 for a residential water softener system.

Higher-end or whole-house systems with advanced features may exceed this range, while smaller, basic units can be found at the lower end of the spectrum.

It has been two years and we love our John Wood water heater!Tom and his Capital Plumbing install team were quiet, efficient, friendly and cleaned up the area well following install. At the same time, all sinks had an easy-to-use shut-off valve added beneath for safety in case of water emergency, a water line for future refrigerator was installed and they threw in a new, safe hose attachment for the clothes washer to replace the aging rubber. Never even thought of it. You never want a water line to burst!

Great experience. Capital plumbing was able to get me in within 2 days whereas all other plumbing companies I called couldn't get me in until next week. I was late returning Toms call, so he took the liberty of doing an inspection on my home and flagged a couple more issues before fixing the one I called about. Really appreciate his diligence and customer service!

A couple of weeks ago Darren replaced our hot water tank after it burst. Capital was so quick to respond and Darren was very good. He helped with the flood we had from the tank. Within a few hours we had a new water tank installed. Today Daniel came back and did amazingly replacing our sump pump and cleaning our furnace and humidifier. He is very thorough and did a great job explaining our issues. Thanks Capital plumbing and heating for always being there for us and having the best employees.
